What is biofeedback?

Updated: Mar 2, 2022

When you are waving your hand to say “hi” to your friends or taking next step on the running machine, you control these actions. But, other body functions like body temperature, heart rate or blood pressure you can’t consciously control as it is your nervous system which is in charge of these functions. You don’t bother about making your heart beat faster or keeping your pressure on good level. It just happens without you even noticing.

Today, as technology advances so do the techniques controlling body conditions. Biofeedback is a state-of-the-art technology designed to prevent and treat conditions like chronic pain,urinary/fecal incontinence, high/low blood pressure, migraine headaches, and many more. This technology allows to focus on subtle body changes to achieve needed results. During a biofeedback session, one is connected to electrical sensors/electrodes which send signal to the monitor displaying sounds, images or other graphics to represent certain body functions.

For instance, when you’re under stress, your muscles get tight, blood pressure increases, breathing becomes quicker. Watching stress responses on the monitor will allow you to get instant feedback as you can try to stop them. The idea behind biofeedback is that, by using the power of your mind and becoming aware and of what's going on inside your body, you can maintain better control over your health.
